El cine y los profesionales iberoamericanos estarán presentes este año en los Oscars con las películas de los mexicanos Guillermo del Toro, "Pinocho / Pinocchio" (mejor film de animación); Alfonso Cuarón, "Le pupille"  (mejor corto de ficción) y Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Bardo" (mejor fotografía); del argentino  Santiago Mitre, "Argentina, 1985" (mejor película internacional) y de la cubana Ana de Armas, "Blonde" (mejor actriz protagonista).

La cosecha pudo ser mayor, pero la competencia era dura. Siempre según las previas candidaturas en otros premios, "Pinocho / Pinocchio" se quedó sin posibilidades en banda sonora, canción y diseño de producción. "Bardo" no fue tenida en cuenta como film internacional, y dejando aparte a Ana de Armas, ningún intérprete hispano se incluyó en las categorías actorales.

Las mayores posibilidades recaen en Del Toro. "Argentina, 1985" no lo tiene fácil ante la alemana "Sin novedad en el frente / All Quiet on the Western Front / Im Westen nichts Neues", que opta también a mejor película (sin posibilidades en este rubro) y otras siete categorías más. Por su parte, Ana de Armas tendrá en Cate Blanchett ("Tár") y Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All At Once") a sus mejores oponentes.

Es precisamente esta cinta la que lidera las candidaturas, al conseguir un total de 11, seguida por "Almas en pena de Inisherin / Los espíritus de la isla / The Banshees of Inisherin" y "Sin novedad en el frente / All Quiet on the Western Front / Im Westen nichts Neues", ambas con nueve.
