El debut del realizador brasileño Fernando Meirelles en el cine en inglés, "El jardinero fiel" ("The Constant Gardener"), recibió siete nominaciones a los British Independent Film Award (BIFA), apenas una menos que los films que lideraron las candidaturas: "Mrs Henderson Presents", de Stephen Frears, y "The Libertine", de Laurence Dunmore.

"Mrs Henderson Presents", "The Constant Gardener", "The Libertine" y "A Cock and Bull Story" -cinta de Michael Winterbottom, con cinco nominaciones- monopolizaron las principales categorías de estos galardones al cine independiente, que serán entregados en una ceremonia a realizarse en Londres el 30 de noviembre.

"The Constant Gardener" aspira a premios de interpretación -Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz y Bill Nighy-, guión, dirección,película y el apartado técnico, donde el uruguayo afincado en Brasil, César Charlone, es candidato como director de fotografía. Algo que también repite "Mrs Henderson Presents", con Bob Hoskins, Judi Dench y Kelly Reilly como actores nominados y la vestuarista Sandy Powell en la categoría destinada a los rubros técnicos. El reparto principal de "The Libertine" -Johnny Depp, Tom Hollander, Rosamund Pike y Rupert Friend-, también ha resultado nominado, al igual que su director, que además compite como realizador nóvel.

Meirelles y Charlone no son la única presencia latina en esta 8 edición de los BIFA, ya que la venezolana "Secuestro Express", de Jonathan Jakubowicz, fue nominada en la categoría de mejor película extranjera.

Otros galardones que se otorgarán en el marco de la gala son el de Personalidad del Año, que entregará la filial británica de Variety a la internacional Keira Knightley, y el Richard Harris Award que recibirá Tilda Swinton por su contribución artística.
